Current News

March 2, 2010

Hi everybody.  It's been a while, but a lot has been going on here.  On January 24, we took Patsy into the hospital with chest pains. She didn't actually have a heart attack, but I think they were calling it unstable angina.  The doctors were able to stabilize her, but then couldn't get her into Winnipeg for an angiogram until the next week.  She had to stay in the hospital to keep her priority higher on the list.  Well with complications from all the medications she was given to keep her stable she ended up with complications that delayed the angiogram.  She ended up waiting in the hospital, bedridden because the doctors were afraid of blood clots, for 26 days. When she finally got her angiogram, they were able to put a stent in and sent her home the next day.  It is taking her a little longer to bounce back from this one, more from the enforced bedrest in the hospital than from the procedure itself.

Now that she is home, life is returning to normal. Lloyd has been having fun taxiing his plane up and down the bay.  I think it is a great temptation to let it lift off, but he is behaving until he gets the required amount of taxiing in and then he can get it certified.  A dream come true for him.

February was a beautiful month with lots of sunshine and warm afternoons.  Donna has gotten out quite often this past week or so.

Yesterday, some more of us were able to join her.

Our friend, George, had to plunge his hand down the hole to keep this one from getting away when it broke his line right at the surface.

Bye for now.

January 15, 2010

Happy New Year!  Hope you had a very Blessed Christmas and are enjoying the New Year.  It has turned almost balmy here considering it is January, with the temps going above freezing yesterday.  I'm sure it won't last.

Thought you might like to see what Donna was up to a couple of days ago.

                   Nice job Donna!!

We have recently updated our Opportunities page.  You can see availabilities through the end of July, so if anybody is thinking about a trip this year, check out the dates or give us a call.  We look forward to hearing from you

December 4, 2009

Time has flown again.  It seems like we were just moving in from the camp and now December is here and everyone is preparing for the Christmas holidays.

We enjoyed a beautiful November with temperatures well into the 50's many days and lots of sunshine.  The snow has finally arrived, though, these last few days and is turning the landscape into a winter wonderland.

We ended off our season with another very successful deer hunt.  Th big one pictured below, was a beautiful 9 point shot by Pete Jacobs, and weighed in at 287 lbs. field dressed.

We had 4 deer hunters again this season and all 4 met with success.

Kristin was very excited when she got her 1st deer this year.

Our duck hunters had some good shooting and great fishing.  This 40 inch northern wrecked Paul's favorite lure, but judging by his smile he wasn't too upset.

Have a very Blessed Christmas and Happy New Year, and we will talk to you again soon.

Just received more pictures of some of our mid-September fishermen and their catches

Sept 28, 2009

Just got some new pictures this morning from the Daltons and grandson, Andrew.

Andrew was very excited for his Grandma Sue when she landed this nice northern when they were here in early September.

Andrew is ready for shorelunch.

Sept 27, 2009

What a beautiful September we have enjoyed!!  The sun has shone, and the temps have been in the 70's and 80's.  After a rather cool summer, it has been much appreciated.

Now that we are getting closer to welcoming our duck hunters back, we are looking for some colder weather.  It has been rather cool, and windy today, so maybe more fall-like weather is on its way.

Anders and Kristin headed back to university at the beginning of the month and are settling into their routine for the school year.

The walleye fishing has stayed strong.  Jeff Koeppel and Travis had a great time last week, along with the rest of the rest of Jeff's group.

Here are some samples of muskie action seen in Sept.

Our bear hunters had a couple of successful days.

Hope to see you soon.

Well, it has been a while since we updated this page. Hi to everyone, and we hope things are going well for you.

We didn't see a lot of sun during July, but when we did get a few nice days in a row, everyone sure enjoyed it.

We have some more nice pictures to share with you.

Arnold and Rusk Anderson thoroughly enjoyed their shorelunch.  Who says you can't enjoy the outdoors just because you turn 90.

Arnold and grandson, Travis,  also enjoyed 3 days of fishing.

Dale Larson had fun bringing in this walleye.  It measured at 30 3/4 inches.

A couple more nice ones that put a smile on Rick's face.

Tom Koke, Dan Huston, and Tim Lovich celebrated their 20th year of visiting New Moon Lodge.

Here are some of their fish caught this year.

8 1/2 lb. Northern

26.5 inch walleye

40 inch muskie

43 inch muskie

Newcomer to the group, Brian, topped off the trip with this 47 incher.

Remember,  Fall is a beautiful time of the year up here, and we are running our Mid-Summer Special through September, so give us a call.  We would love to hear from you.

July 4, 2009

Happy 4th of July to everyone south of the border! Hope you are enjoying the holiday.

Nick and Joe had fun catching these guys(outfishing Grandpa Ron again).  The 1st one is 54 inches.  The other two are 43 1/2 inches each

June 29, 2009

Well, we have had our big 3-day windstorm for the season.  Lost a few basswoods, but no damage to the buildings.  It is supposed to blow itself out this evening, and then the forecast is much nicer for the rest of the week.

We have a few more pictures from last week to add to the list.

13 year old Brayden had a smile a mile wide when he landed his 45 inch muskie.

Ryan Luther was reeling in a nice bass when he felt another big hit and he ended up bringing in this 49 1/2 inch muskie along with the bass.

Another one of Ryan's catches.

June 17, 2009

Robert and his guests Arnie and Jo Ann were thrilled when Robert landed this 57 inch muskie!

June 15, 2009

The beautiful summer weather finally arrived a few days ago. Our fishermen have been enjoying it along with some good fishing.  We have another sampling of the fish caught this past week. These pictures and others can be seen on our Facebook page as well.

Arnie and Jo Ann had a great day yesterday with lots of bass and walleye.

Bob caught this one after just a couple of minutes of fishing from our main dock on his day of arrival.

Here's another happy fisherwoman with her 42 inch catch of the day

June 5, 2009

Well we had a bit of a glitch on the website, and lost all of our updates since December. Thought we could at least get some of the pictures back up.

Here are some of the fish caught in May.

Rick started out this day with his 28 1/2 inch catch

Then Nick started his run with a 24 inch

a 26 inch

and then this 28 inch.

Grandpa Ron got in on the action too with this 27 inch walleye.

Here is a sampling of some of the fish the Salg party caught this spring.

Mark was especially happy when he caught this 52 incher.

Lloyd unveiled his plane this spring.

December 29, 2008

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and as we head into the New Year, we wish all the best to you.

It has been awhile since our last update.  It is always a busy time, closing down the resort, getting things put away on mainland and then preparing for the Christmas season.  In between all of this, Rocky and I have made trips to visit each of the university students and then to pick them up for the Christmas break.

We had a very successful deer hunt this year. All 4 hunters got their deer.  Steve Wentarmini, 2nd from the right in the picture below, was extremely proud of his trophy. It is a 14 pt. that dressed out at 260lbs. We are still waiting on its score. Steve, Pete and Dan were also very happy with their 8, 9, and 10 pointers.

The snow is covering the ground now, and the lake is frozen over.  We have had some pretty good cold snaps that have given us a good ice base.  Donna has started fishing this week. Caught some nice ones.

Dwight and Squeak doing their part

Hope this finds everyone healthy and happy, and we will talk to you again soon.

October 10, 2008

We are anxiously waiting for Kristin to come home for our Thanksgiving weekend, she was home 2 weeks ago and it was a very short visit as she had to go back on Sunday, this time she gets to spend 2 full days with us and then back to school. Unfortunatlely Anders can't make it as it is too far for such a short time., but he will be in our thoughts anyway.

It is so nice to be in the kitchen-watching the sun come up-watching the guides( Larry, Mark, Travis,Robert Rocky) getting ready to leave for the day. They are all busy on the docks getting the boats ready and visiting with each other by the map to see where they are meeting for lunch or which direction they will go to fish. I am still amazed that they are able to find there way back to the island because I still get turned around out there, and one island looks like the other one.

We are seeing some nice fish still being caught, and the guides are talking about the ducks that they are seeing in the bays so looks like we are going to have a good fall hunt.

Fall is my favorite time of year to be at the island , the colors are so pretty and even though the weather can sometimes be trying it is still nice.

In one day you can experience every kind of weather you want from sunshine to rain and still it is beautiful we are very blessed.

The fresh bread is out of the oven and the evening meal is ready to go so with that in mind I wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving from your Canadian friends

It has been a couple of weeks since the kids went off to University, and yes we are noticing a difference in the noise level at the resort.

It is way too quiet!!!

We miss the smile of our waitress as she greets the guests in the morning and Andy on the dock with his shy smile.

They are the future, and we must let them go, but its kind of hard on Aunties. The parents are having a tough time too!

All is well here we are zooming into Fall, the colors are starting to turn on the trees and the water temp is dropping, soon the fires will be built in the stoves in the Lodge and it will be nice to sit with a hot cup of coffee in the lounge and watch the lake, sounds kind a fun to me.

Soon we will see the Geese and the Ducks start to fly and that mean's Camo colors, and our Hunters will be thinking of that great shoot they will have or the Muskies Hunters bundled up to the neck in winter gear to catch that one last fish.

We are looking forward to seeing each and everyone of you, so until then, have a great day.

Donna

August 24, 2008

Just a couple more days, and Andy and Kristin will be heading off to university.  Sure will be different (quiet, haha) with both of them gone this winter.

August continued to produce some quality muskie fishing, along with the walleyes.

Ron Miller, with his two grandsons, Nick and Joe counted 50 muskies over a 3 day period, landing 12 of them.

Joe was pretty happy with the walleyes too!

Earlier in the season Travis took Donna and Linda out for an evening of fishing.  They were all smiles with these two beauties.

August 5, 2008

Halfway through the season!  Lloyd and Patsy are both doing well after their heart problems in June.

Fishing has been great! One boat landed two 26 inch walleyes from the same spot yesterday.  There have been some nice muskies caught as shown in the following pictures.

15 year old Melissa Luther caught these two nice ones in two consecutive evenings, August 1 and 2.

Some of the other fish they caught over their stay this past weekend.

The Schumacher family enjoyed some great fishing the week before as well.

July 26, 2008

Enjoy the following samples of fish caught this year, plus some of our incredible scenery and wildlife.

June 23, 2008

Well here we are, over 2 months since we last updated this page.  Time sure flies when you're busy.  There has been a lot happening here since April.  Top on our list is Lloyd and Patsy.  They both had heart attacks within 2 weeks of each other.  Lloyd ended up having a triple bypass on June 8, and Patsy had 2 stints put in on June 12.  She says they always do everything together so why not this?  We are all grateful that the doctors acted so quickly and they are both on the mend now.  In fact, Patsy says she feels great!

To go back to the beginning of our season, Dwight, Donna, Patsy and I moved out to the island before breakup, on April 25, to do some remodelling in the lodge, dining room and store.  The ice was still on the lake, but we were able to come out by wind barge. A snow storm that night took us by surprise.

We woke the next morning to 4 ft. drifts!  Approximately 16 inches fell.  That made life a little more difficult, but we pressed on, and we are all happy with the results of our labours.  I have to admit, I left the other 3 working for about 5 days, while Kristin and I headed to Niagara Falls, ON for the Provincial Badminton Championships, for which she and her partner qualified.

When opening weekend arrived, the weather was still on the cold side, but the fishing was great, so everybody was happy.  Some of our long time guests were coming in and saying it was some of the best fishing they have ever had here, which is great to hear.

Hope to have some pictures for you soon.

April 7, 2008

It has been a great weekend here.  Rocky and I celebrated our 22nd anniversary on the 5th.  We took a short road trip to Grand Forks, did some shopping, took in a movie, and then planned on surprising a friend we haven't seen in about 9 years by showing up at his new restaurant.  The surprise was on us too when it turned out he was hosting his father's birthday party there that night, so we were able to visit with the family and mutual friends.  If you are in Grand Forks, we would certainly recommend The Toasted Frog.  The food was great and the atmosphere lively and friendly.

When Rocky and I got home Sunday afternoon we found that most of the  family had headed out fishing, and Dwight, Anders and Kristin were going to join them for a weiner roast in the evening.  We all headed out there and since there was still a couple of hours of daylight left for fishing, some of us grabbed a rod and a minnow and tried our luck at the walleyes.  Patsy was top fisherwoman of the day, catching her limit of keepers and throwing several back.  Donna caught a nice 2 1/2 pound walleye, but she was much happier when earlier in the week, she landed a 5 1/2 pounder.  After it was too dark to fish, the fire was lit and supper on a stick was served.  Yum, yum.  Hot dogs taste the best  when cooked over a campfire.

Now today, the 7th, is Dwight and Donna's 29th anniversary.  They also took some time on Saturday to celebrate by heading into town for dinner and a movie.  They have enjoyed a lot of travelling this winter, so they didn't feel like heading too far from home.  Travis got his cast off his wrist on Monday.  It seems to have healed well.  There might be some surgery coming his way though for his collar bone.  It has not mended together very well at all.  Hopefully the doctors will fix him up quick and he will be as good as new.

The ice is still very thick on the lake, , but a lot of the snow is gone from the ground.  We didn't get any of the 20 or more inches that hit Minnesota over the weekend.  It stopped just south of us.

Hopefully the warm weather will come and stay soon and make quick work of the ice.  It will be nice to see the blue of open water again.

Chat with you again soon.  Have a great day!

Kathy

March 25, 2008

Happy Easter to everyone!  Hope everyone had a very blessed weekend, celebrating with family and friends.  We were all together at Lloyd & Pat's for the traditional egg hunt and Easter dinner.  It was a lovely day.  It is awesome to think of the depths of God's love that He would send His Son to the cross for each one of us.

Dwight and Donna just returned from a trip to Mexico.  It sounds like they had a great time.  Travis is recovering from a snowmobile accident in which he broke his wrist and collarbone.  We are all thankful it wasn't worse.

Lloyd had his airplane out of the shop for a test run of the motor.  Just a few more things to do and it will be ready for its test flight.  He and Patsy have taken a little trip into Minnesota for a couple of days of shopping and R&R.

Kristin had an exciting week in mid-March.  She and 12 of her classmates, along with 3 chaperones visited London and France on a "Canadian Battlefields Tour".  They were in London for 2 days, then took the Chunnel and stayed in Belgium, Normandy and Paris.  They visited places such as Vimy Ridge, Juno Beach, Gold Beach, the Flanders Museum as well as doing the sightseeing tours of the Eiffel Tower, The Louvre etc.  She came home tired, but happy.

Although we have seen some signs of spring on the way with some warmer weather, yesterday we got about 4 inches of snow, and there might be more on the way.   Winter doesn't want to give up its grip yet, but soon it will have to, and we are all looking forward to that.

We'll chat again soon.  Have a great day!

Kathy

February 6, 2008

Hello to all.  Hope the winter is treating you well.  We have been offline for awhile with regards to the website, but are happy to be back now.  It has been a busy winter.  Dwight has been seeing the doctors to try and figure out what caused his stroke.  He and Donna are in Winnipeg today seeing a specialist.  He is doing very well, but is learning to take it a little easier.  Although January was a very cold month, Donna still found some warmer days to get out ice fishing, and she and her fishing buds have done very well.

Lloyd is getting very close to finishing his airplane.  Patsy has been busy doing some painting in their home.

Anders is home for the winter and summer to take some extra preuniversity courses that he found he needed in order to continue with his mechatronics engineering course.  Kristin is just finishing up her hockey season and then it is on to badminton.  Rocky has been building cupboards for my laundry room, and I have been getting the bulletin out, which you all should have by now.

Hope it got you thinking about spending a little time with us this season.  We have variuos openings in June, so if you thought it was too late to book a spring vacation, take a look at our Availabilties page (link on our home page) to see if any of the dates would work for you.

Hope to hear from you soon, and it definitely won't be 4 months before we chat again.

Kathy

October 3, 2007

Hi to all, sorry it took so long to update the Current News but we have had a little set back. Dwight who is our hard working guy, surprised us with a little Stroke, started in his leg and worked its way up, ALL is well we got him to the Hospital in time and he is back to very light labor at the island, under the very watchful eye of Donna and family.

Well Andy is at University, in Watrloo ontario, about a 21 hour drive from here, and all seems to be going very well for him, the move down with his parents and sister was quite fun, and they arrived on time and moved him in with no problems, he is now rooming with 3 other guys that he gets along with real well.

This is such a beautiful time of year for us, the leaves are turning color, we have gold orange and reds, and of course they are falling when we have a wind which means lots of raking up to keep the island nice and neat.

We are about to start our Duck hunting season which we refer to as Blast and Cast.

Some are fishing and hunting, and some are taking up a different kind of hunting this year as we are venturing into Deer Hunting.

We are looking forward to making this an ever growing event.

Kristin has entered her Senior year at school, with a look out world here I come, atitude, she is such a beautiful girl , inside and out , her parents should be so proud of her, she wants to be a Chef, not the stuff aunty Donna does but a real Chef. I am thrilled because she can apprentice out here and put me to shame.

Time for lunch so must go , will keep you updated on Dwights recovery, it is still earily days so please keep him in your prayers,

blessings to all

Donna

How is every one, been kind of busy and haven't been able to get to you for a while, we have had rather a HOT July and that includes the fish.

This year along with the 50th Anniversary of the Resort, Donna celebrated her 50th Birthday, which she took in stride and of course Kathy and Patsy had a good time with a surprise Party for her, all had a great time and we managed to not have the storm of the century, which always seemed to fall on Donna's Birthday, the guides had a good time telling her that the clouds in the west were getting bigger as the 31st got closer.

We are slowing down now and the guy's are doing a little maintanace around the resort, Dwight is painting the storage building and Rocky has been busy with many little projects that have needed his attention.

Andy's departure date is getting closer and even though he is excited to go I think there is a little aprehention at the same time, but they tell us that the University has such a busy orintation week that he won't miss us at all.

We are seenig some nice Muskies around the area and we had the pleasure of having a young man (12) who had never fished Muskie before catch a beautiful 37"er, that is what we call the luck of a beginner.

Well time to get back to the kitchen, my turkey smells like it wants a little attention,I need to make a little gravy and mashed potatoes , corn and dressing  and a angel food cake for dessert, O.K. I have made myself hungery .

Must go Donna

July 11, 2007

What a wild June we had, it was a month of rain and more rain.  The lake is now, as Larry put it, " exactly were we want it" so we are hoping that the rain ceases and the sun starts to shine .

The fishing still seems to be on the right track.  The guides are happy and the guests are going home with their limits. So all is well.

Dave "Doc" Grauer here with Rocky and his 43" muskie, caught on June 25.   Doc, who is now 80, first came fishing to Lake of the Woods with his father at Moen's Camp (Lloyd's parents' resort) when Lloyd was 17.

Doc, on the right, with his brother-in-law,

                        Phil Desenis.

Over a span of 60 years, Phil and Doc along with their families have become a part of the New Moon Lodge family.

Rick Mann was smiling pretty big with catches like these on his first trip to New Moon.

This 53 1/2 inch muskie took two to hold it up.  Guide, Robert Morrison, said this beauty, caught by long time guest, Tim Lovich, was about the heaviest for its length that he had ever tried to lift.

June is a month of many events.  Rocky and Kathy are so proud of their son, Anders. He has graduated from high school and will be continuing his education at the University of Waterloo, in Waterloo Ontario . They are going to drive him down at the end of August and I kind of think Kathy will have a rather large box of kleenex with her. We are all going to miss him,but we wish him well.

To help celebrate our 50th, we have been working on a dedication wall for Lloyd and Patsy. This is a collection of pictures that has been taken over the years showing the growing pains of New Moon Lodge.  Some of our long time guests may remember the changes as they took place.

Talk to you again soon.

June 16, 2007

What a busy time we have been having with all the big fish being caught.

This week Travis has been guiding a couple from Des Moines, Iowa.

Mrs. Bunten was able to latch onto a 46 1/2" Muskie; the biggest fish she had ever caught. They had a good 30 minute fight and after pictures it was released back to the water

.

Larry and Robert have both been reporting  lots of Muskies and Northern being caught, and, of course, the Bass have been lots of fun.  Walleye are in abundance also. Rocky's guest caught a 7# Walleye today just off the island.

With all the changes in the weather we have been having, it has been a challenge for the guides, but they always seem to be able to get the good ones and that is what we love about them.

Well after a Steak Dinner tonight the guests are all relaxing in their cabins telling fish stories.  Some have come back in to get one more Brownie before they retire for the night.  So with that I say good night and God Bless.

May 27,2007

What an opener! Our first guests, Jay & Jude and Rob & Denise, arrived on the 18th to an absolutely beautiful day. The sun was shining until they settled in and then I think maybe Jay had something to do with the weather change because it started to get cold that night and was cool for the rest of their stay. How about that Jay!

It has since decided that because we now have guests at the camp it should rain; and rain it has.  We needed it though!  We started out with a fire ban which has now been lifted and the good news is that the water level has come up about 2".  So we can't complain about that!

Our guests have all been catching some beautiful fish. Even on those bad weather days the fishing has been great, lots of 5 #ers and of course the shorelunch size.

We are anxious to see everyone again and can hardly wait to greet each and every one of you .

Did you know that if a group of 12 or more book a vacation one person's trip is free!!!!!

Hope to hear from you soon I have to get back to the kitchen the bread is ready for the pans.

God Bless .

May 17,2007

It has been a wonderful Spring. The weather has been so great. The lake went out on the 1st of May which meant that it was time to get back to work.

Donna had a very hard time hanging up her ice fishing rods and was fishing on the last day of fishing ( 15th of April) on 36" of ice. She finished the season with 4 beautiful walleye for Dwight to clean.

The opener is just around the corner and we are looking forward to seeing our regular guests, and of course the coffee and cookies are always on for the new ones that stop in to see us.

Donna has been busy in the kitchen making batches of fresh cookies and Red River Cereal bread, and sweet rolls. Now doesn't that sound good!

The yard looks so pretty with it 's fresh green grass, the new leaves on the trees and Max and Sophie, running free, chasing the brave squirrel around the yard.

We have our first guest arriving tomorrow, and we are anxious to see them.  It is like one of our own coming home after a long journey.

To all of you heading North this summer , we look forward to seeing you, whether just for a quick visit , or a longer stay.  Drive safe and God Bless!
